Audio Store Near Me: Buying Speakers and Receivers in NJ

September 11, 20266 min readAudio Crafters Inc

Search for an audio store near you and the picture that comes to mind is a listening room: speakers lined up along a wall, a rack of receivers, and someone behind the counter who can switch between them. A few of those rooms still exist, and they are a fine way to spend an afternoon. They are not the most useful thing an audio store can do for you, though.

What matters is buying gear that suits your room, at a fair price, and getting it set up so it sounds the way it did on paper. We do not run a showroom. We sell through authorized-dealer relationships and low overhead, and the listening happens in your house. Here is what to know before you buy speakers or a receiver, wherever you end up buying them.

What a Listening Room Can and Cannot Tell You

A demo room is built to flatter speakers. The walls are treated, the speakers sit at carefully measured distances, and the chair is in exactly the right spot. Your living room has windows, a hard floor or two, a couch pushed against a wall, and a TV in the middle of it all. The same pair of speakers will not sound the same in both places.

Bass is where the difference is biggest. Low frequencies depend heavily on the size of the room and on where the speakers and the listener sit in it, which is why a subwoofer that sounded tight in a store can sound boomy in a basement. A store listen tells you the character of a speaker, whether it leans bright or warm. It cannot tell you how that speaker will sound against your walls.

If you do visit a listening room, bring music you know well, listen at the volume you actually play at home, and compare speakers at matched volume. In a quick side-by-side, the louder speaker almost always sounds better, which tells you nothing about which one is actually better.

Four Decisions to Make Before You Buy Anything

A lot of disappointing audio purchases start with buying a product before deciding on the system it belongs to. These four decisions come first.

Passive, Powered, or Wireless

Passive speakers have no amplifier inside, so they need a receiver or amplifier to drive them. Powered speakers carry their own amplification. Wireless systems like Sonos stream over your Wi-Fi and run from an app. Each approach works well on its own. Mixing them without a plan is how people end up with three apps, two remotes, and a room that only plays music from one phone.

A Receiver or a Simple Amplifier

An AV receiver, from brands like Onkyo and Integra, is the hub of a TV room. It switches video sources, decodes surround sound, and powers several speakers at once. If the room is for music only, or you are adding sound to a kitchen or a deck, a smaller stereo or streaming amplifier is often all you need. Buying a surround receiver for a room that will only ever play background music is money spent on inputs nobody uses.

Architectural or Freestanding Speakers

Bookshelf and floor-standing speakers can be delivered, placed, and connected in an afternoon. In-ceiling and in-wall speakers, such as the Episode line we carry, disappear into the room, but they are part of an installation from the start. They need a wire path and a mounting plan before anyone cuts a hole. If you want architectural speakers, choose the installer before you choose the speaker.

What Is Already in the House

Existing speaker wire in the walls, an older receiver that still works, a Sonos speaker in the kitchen, a TV with an eARC HDMI port. Every one of these changes what you should buy next. A short list, or a few photos of the back of your current gear, is often worth more than a sale price.

Where Buying Through a Dealer Pays Off

Our pricing is strongest on higher-end gear, which in audio means receivers and speakers. The reason is simple: authorized-dealer relationships and low overhead, with no showroom to pay for. Here is what buying through us includes:

  • Price matching. We match or beat online prices on comparable products. Send us the listing and we will do the math with you on the phone.
  • More than 200 brands through our distributors, including Sonos, Onkyo, and Integra, so you are not limited to what fits on a shelf.
  • Free delivery on qualifying purchases across Central and South Jersey.
  • Unboxing and setup on the same visit, with installation if you want it.
  • Discounted installation when the equipment comes from us.
  • An extra year of warranty on every electronics purchase, at no cost.
  • One phone number afterward. The company that sold the receiver is the company that installed it, so nobody points at somebody else when something needs attention.

Choose the speakers first, then the amplifier. Speakers vary a lot in how much power they need to play cleanly. A receiver that looks strong on a spec sheet can run hot or strain on speakers that are hard to drive, while an efficient speaker can sound excellent on a modest amp. Picking the receiver first and hoping the speakers suit it is doing the job backwards.

Setup Is Half the Sound

Once the gear is home, placement and settings decide the rest. Speakers need the right distance from the walls and from each other. The subwoofer needs a spot where the bass is even across the seats, which is rarely the first corner it gets pushed into. A receiver's automatic setup, run with the microphone that usually comes in the box, does a lot of good, but only after the speakers are placed well. We cover that side in more depth in our guide to surround sound calibration.

If the plan grows past one room, it becomes a system rather than a purchase. Our whole house audio and home theater pages explain how those projects are designed, and the same buying advantages apply to every piece of gear in them.

Where We Deliver and Install

We are based in Little Egg Harbor and deliver and install across Central and South Jersey, including:

  • Toms River
  • Barnegat
  • Long Beach Island
  • Point Pleasant
  • Freehold
  • Middletown
  • Rumson
  • Galloway
  • Hammonton
  • Ocean City
  • Sea Isle City
  • Cape May

If a TV is part of the same purchase, our guide to buying from a TV dealer covers that side of it.

What to Expect When You Call

Tell us about the room, what you already own, what you want to hear, and a rough budget. We will recommend two or three options at different price points and explain what changes between them. If you have found a price online, send the listing and we will do the math with you.

When the gear is ready, delivery and setup get scheduled together so nothing sits in a box. If you already own equipment that has never sounded right, a service call is often the cheaper fix, and service calls start at $105.

Either way, you talk to the person who does the work, and the goal stays the same: gear that fits your room and sounds right in it.
